Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a disorder where you feel an intense fear of gaining weight, and restrict calorie intake to a dramatic low. This may also accompany attempted weight loss methods such as extreme exercising or purging via vomiting, laxatives or diuretics.

Some of the symptoms of anorexia include:
  • Fear of gaining weight
  • Preoccupation with food and eating
  • Viewing themselves as fat even when dangerously thin
  • Cutting food into small pieces and pushing it around a plate to make it appear as if you are eating
  • Rigorous exercise regimes
  • Possibly purging via vomiting, laxatives or diuretics

There are many physical warning signs to watch out for including:
  • Rapid weight loss or fluctuations in weight
  • Lessened libido in men
  • Disturbance in menstruation in females
  • Fainting or dizziness
  • Low energy
  • Poor circulation leading to feeling cold
  • Facial changes and the appearance of fine hair on your body
The health implications of anorexia are serious and can lead to death. These can include degeneration of the liver, abnormal thyroid gland function, hypothermia, carotenemia (a yellowing of the skin), heart problems amongst many others. An anorexic person may require hospitalisation in severe cases to save their life.ghh
