The Importance of Support from Family and Friends

As with any other disease, for those with a mental health issue, support from family and friends is extremely important for their recovery. Although you may initially feel shame about your loved one's illness, mental disorders are real and sufferers deserve the same level of support as any other dissease.

If you recognise the signs of mental illness in a loved one, it is important to get support as soon as possible. The first step is to visit a GP and to discuss your concerns. However, if you can provide support to your family member or friend at the appointment, it is a good idea to come along if you are asked.

It is a good idea to educate yourself as much as possible about mental illness and any warning signs of possible relapse. When it comes to mental illness, knowledge is power and there are numerous resources such as books, reliable internet sources, and mental health practitioners.

You should learn about  the causes of the mental illness and understand that it is not your fault that your friend or family member has a mental illness.

You need to understand that you can not do everything to help the mentally ill person, and you need to take time to look after yourself. If you recognise or suspect signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviours, manipulation, aggression or psychosis, you should let their psychologist or psychiatrist know.
